Flood insurance is one of the most neglected types of policies here in Broward County, partly because it’s sometimes not required by mortgage lenders. According to the Federal Insurance Administration, less than 25% of homes in flood-prone areas are covered by flood insurance, even though flooding may be up to 30 times more likely than fire.
Despite its importance, flood insurance can be difficult to obtain if you live in certain areas. People living in an unmanaged floodplain or near the coast sometimes have trouble finding an insurer. Where it’s available, flood coverage includes damage caused by flooding, overflow of inland or tidal waters, mud slides, erosion damage, and sewer damage caused by flooding. Florida flood insurance may also be available to renters, condominium owners and co-op owners.
